Come join us to discuss the book "Meet Addy Walker" the character from American Girls. We will learn about a courageous girl growing up during the Civil War. Our meeting will include crafting and a snack. The book club is open to girls 8-13. Books are available at the Heritage Center gift shop.

The Heritage Center will be participating in the Arts Walkabout on June 2, 2011 5:30-8PM. We will have a local artisan showing some of their work. You will also have an opportunity to browse our eclectic gift shop. We hope to you see there so come out and support our town and local artisans.

In this day camp, girls will focus on etiquettes, handcrafts, expressions, culminating on the final day with a tea party. Camp includes the opportunity to learn about African American history of Chesterfield County, African American women who shaped history, the Underground Railroad and more.

Joseph McGill Slave Cabin Project

Joseph McGill will be sharing his Slave Cabin Project that he created to bring attention to the need to preserve these historical structures. Joseph has slept in slave cabins throughout South Carolina and other southern states. Joseph McGill is a program officer with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a founder of the 54th Massachusetts, Co. I, Civil War Reenactment Regiment and serves on the South Carolina African American Heritage Commission. Come and listen to his experiences with this historical project and the unique stories that have unfolded during his overnight visits during his stay at these slave cabins.

Seating is limited and this event is free.

Special Presentation

Come help us celebrate Black History Month with a special presentation by celebrated author and storyteller Kitty Wilson-Evans. Ms. Wilson-Evans is known for her interpretations at Historic Brattonsville in York County, South Carolina. She has presented her stories of the slave experience at museums, historic sites and schools in several states. Recently she appeared in the documentary, God in America which debut last fall on ETV. Again, we invite you to come and experience Kitty Wilson-Evans as she portrays a slave name Kessie at the Heritage Center.
